Decades of underfunding have led to the massive infrastructure gap that continues to affect First Nations today across this country.

In Ontario alone, it will cost $58.9 billion to ensure on-reserve infrastructure in First Nations in Ontario is on par with the rest of the province by 2030 — a gap that is among the widest in the country.

If this gap is not addressed, and the status quo continues, the infrastructure gap in Ontario will rise to $80.9 billion by 2040 due to cost escalation alone.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a promise to close the infrastructure gap in First Nations by 2030. Today, we know what that will take.

It will cost $350 billion nationally to get on-reserve infrastructure up to par with the rest of Canada by 2030. In Ontario alone, it will cost $58.9 billion to ensure on-reserve infrastructure in Ontario First Nations is on par with the rest of the province.

Yesterday, Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare and Fi

Yesterday, Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare and First Nations Leadership met with provincial government representatives to express their concerns that police will no longer be able to keep First Nations communities safe once Ontario’s new policing legislation comes into effect on April 1, 2024.

The Community Safety and Policing Act was introduced by the Ford government in 2019 to modernize policing. Section 11 of the Act states that the enforcement of First Nations’ bylaws is not considered a mandatory part of safe and effective policing in Ontario, which First Nations maintain is discriminatory. The province had the chance to recognize First Nations’ bylaws through regulations that were created before the Act came into effect, but did not.

First Nations are now asking for Ontario to show it believes First Nations’ bylaws are part of safe and effective policing by fixing the regulations, as they have voiced many times over to the province.

📢The Chiefs of Ontario will host a media event to coincide with the inaugural First Nations Community Wellness Conference (FNCWC) on March 19th at 2:15 p.m. EST

The media event will begin with the opening remarks from First Nations Leadership. Following these remarks, Leadership and youth speakers will highlight the determinants of health and wellness in relation to economic empowerment, environment protection, mental health, gender, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities.

Location: Kingsway Room, InterContinental Toronto Centre, 225 Front St W., Toronto, ON or Virtual via Zoom.

Who should attend: Accredited Media and First Nations Leadership

Media accreditation is required. Please register by emailing Isak Vaillancourt, Communications Manager at isak.vaillancourt@coo.org – please specify whether you will be attending in-person or virtually.

There is no cost for accredited media to attend.
