The Chiefs of Ontario will be hosting two addition

The Chiefs of Ontario will be hosting two additional virtual information sessions on the Long-Term Reform of the First Nations Children and Family Services (FNCFS) Program Final Agreement. The sessions will take place on:

• September 23, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST
• October 4, 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST

The sessions will focus on all funding components of the draft Final Agreement. Each session will include a dedicated question and answer period, allowing participants to field questions and seek clarification.

To participate in the virtual information sessions, online registration is required.

The Chiefs of Ontario will be hosting a Special Chiefs Assembly on the draft Final Agreement (FA) related to the long-term reforms of the First Nations Children & Family Services (FNCFS) program. Ontario First Nations Leadership will have the opportunity to learn more about proposed long-term reform and vote on the resolution to consider the approval of the FA.

We caught up with Seaira to learn why she signed up for the new Chiefs of Ontario First Nations Business Directory.

"It's going to elevate my business, get my name out there, get my community out there," Maracle said. "I think a central place for Indigenous businesses would be very beneficial for networking—not only for inside Indigenous communities but for the outside as well."

The Final Agreement commits $47.8 billion over ten

The Final Agreement commits $47.8 billion over ten years, retroactive to April 1, 2024,
to implement a reformed First Nations Child and Family Services (FNCFS) Program.

Funding will continue after the ten-year period. Canada’s obligation to provide non-discriminatory services to First Nations children continues to exist after the expiry of the Final Agreement.

Funding is allocated to support First Nations Children and Family Services Agencies and First Nations. It is important to note that the Assembly of First Nations, Chiefs of Ontario, and Nishnawbe Aski Nation are not receiving operational funding under the Final Agreement.

There will be funding to support the parties’ participation in the Reform Implementation Committee, which will be established to oversee and monitor the
implementation of the reformed First Nations Child and Family Services Program.

The Chiefs of Ontario Research and Data Management

The Chiefs of Ontario Research and Data Management Sector has released a report on the social data landscape for First Nations in Ontario. The purpose of this report is to provide an environmental scan on the status of First Nations social data in Ontario, and to assess the barriers and opportunities to advance OCAP® discovered in this scan. Information was gathered through literature reviews, exploring data available online, and interviews with key stakeholders. The social data landscape is quite complex, with a variety of organizations that collect First Nations social data in Ontario. This includes the provincial and federal governments, First Nations themselves, various organizations that provide services to First Nations, and researchers.

First Nation Leadership Ontario share the same concerns that legitimate Métis organizations have had about the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) for years.

The mere existence of individuals of mixed European and First Nation ancestry in the province does not prove the existence of a distinct, rights-bearing nation.

“Our concern is that the MNC’s internal investigation into MNO is merely another example of a process created to rubberstamp the MNO’s claims that only serve MNO’s political agenda,” said Caldwell First Nation Chief Mary Duckworth. “We are deeply skeptical about the results that will come from the MNC’s internal investigation into the MNO. First Nations have lived in Ontario for thousands of years and we’ve done the research that Canada and Ontario haven’t—we know these so-called ‘Métis communities’ never existed.”

MNO’s aggressive and illusory campaign that distorts the historical record to a manufacture distinct Métis communities that never existed must end. First Nations call for transparency from Ontario and Canada and genuine, open scrutiny of the MNO’s claims.

“There is nothing that could come out of the MNC’s internal review that would change the fact that there was never a ‘historic Métis community’ in N’dakimenan,” said Temagami First Nation Chief Shelly Moore-Frappier. “We did exhaustive research to prepare for our land defense in Ontario (Attorney General) v Bear Island Foundation, [1991] and we can guarantee that fact.”

“Our history and genealogies are thoroughly documented by our oral tradition, and fur trade and colonial records. Historically, anyone who could be described as ‘mixed blood’ was naturalized and adopted under our authority. Today, we continue to exercise our inherent right to self-determination. While some of our citizens may be non-status Indians, they are not Métis—they are Teme-Augama Anishnabai,” Chief Moore-Frappier said.

Late last week, the federal government reversed a

Late last week, the federal government reversed a policy that placed a cap on available funding related to Indian Residential Schools. This reversal came after a chorus of opposition from First Nations, Survivors, and other organizations across the country.

First Nations and Survivors learned during a short afternoon meeting in late July that funding for organizations and community leaders searching for missing children and unmarked burials at former residential school sites would be capped at $500,000 per year, down from $3 million—an 86 per cent decrease. The cuts also made many important activities—including archeology, commemoration, and memorialization efforts—ineligible for funding.

“The federal government decided to cap the funding despite increasing demand for additional work and research. The decision immediately impacted several vital groups supporting recovery and healing efforts. The policy decision about resources only serves to retraumatize Survivors,” said Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict. “The legacy of residential schools is felt every single day. It’s felt by Survivors and their descendants, entire communities and Nations.”

Chiefs of Ontario’s political and secretariat offices immediately began writing letters and calling bureaucrats and politicians to have these cuts reversed. This behind-the-scenes campaign complimented the public statements, calls for change, and petitions from First Nations, Survivors, and other organizations.

“We cannot understate the grave impacts these decisions have on Survivors and our Nations,” Regional Chief Benedict said. “Immediately after learning of the changes we began lobbying the government to reconsider.”
