Important update from the Chiefs of Ontario Specia Important update from the Chiefs of Ontario Special Chiefs Assembly: Strength in Unity! Chiefs in Assembly within the Ontario region have passed the resolution on the long-term reform of the First Nations Child and Family Services (FNCFS) program with 62 in favour, 3 opposed, and 1 abstained. Next week, on October 16-18, 2024, the Assembly of First Nations will host a Special Chiefs Assembly on Treaty No. 7 Territory, in Calgary, Alberta, where Chiefs and Proxies from regions across Canada will have an opportunity to deliberate on and vote on the proposed reforms. Q: Does the funding for the governance of the Reformed FNCFS Program come out of funding that will go to First Nations and FNCFS Agencies? A: Funding to support the various secretariats, the RIC and its subcommittees, the Expert Advisory Committee, the various remoteness-focused bodies, the ADR system, the Program Assessments, and the First Nations parties legal fees was negotiated separately. None of the costs listed will be paid out of the funding meant for First Nations and FCNFS Agencies. Tim Maracle wants his family and his community to Tim Maracle wants his family and his community to have the same opportunities he's had. Maracle, a high-structural iron worker by trade, sees the work he does as a means to uplift those through economic empowerment. And it appears to be working. When he started his business, he had just four employees. Now he has 16, with big contracts coming in. But he's not done yet. That's why he signed up for the Ontario First Nations Business Directory. "I'm at the point where I have a lot of opportunities and want to grow and see what I can become," he says. "I did sign up for the directory in the hopes that this is going to make me grow as a small business, so that one day I can look back on this and say, 'That's where I started.'" These institutions caused unimaginable harm to entire generations of First Nations people that can still be felt today. It is a reality with lasting intergenerational impacts that must never be forgotten. Though these ‘schools’ shaped the trajectory of First Nations across Canada, today is also a time to recognize and honour the incredible strength of the survivors and their families. Despite widespread, systematic attempts to erase entire cultures, languages and traditions, these ‘schools’ sought to ‘kill the Indian in the child,’ yet they thrive today. Our unique Nations and cultures exist today because survivors of the residential school system fought to keep them alive—often in the face of serious personal harm. They passed on the traditions, languages and teachings these institutions sought to destroy so that all of us today know who we are, where we come from and how we got here. Their resilience is a testament to the spirit of our people who have fought—and continue to fight—to heal and restore our communities. Reconciliation is an ongoing process. It demands more than words; it requires meaningful action from governments, organizations and society at large.
