The Chiefs of Ontario (COO) is inviting applications for the position of Associate Director of Education. The Associate Director of Education will work with the Director of Education to implement the COO Education Sector Strategic Plan. The Associate Director of Education is a visionary, strategic planner and a proven leader. The ideal candidate will work with the Education team to; provide policy analysis and advice, ensure activities are coordinated and supportive and facilitate consensus building among the First Nations in Ontario related to languages and education. The Associate Director of Education will conduct this in a manner that is respectful of diversity, and in alignment with First Nations culture and traditions.

LOCATION: Toronto, Ontario with the possibility to work remotely.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Builds and maintains partnerships and relationships with government ministries, First Nations leaders, communities, institutions and organizations;
  • Understands federal and provincial laws and regulations that affect First Nations;
  • Oversees the policy analysis of legislation, standards and regulations that affects First Nations education in Ontario;
  • Develops and submits funding proposals to implement projects related to the goals and objectives of the Education Sector and the Chiefs of Ontario;
  • Adheres to Chiefs of Ontario financial management policy to ensure funding requirements and reporting are met;
  • Provides leadership and coaching to the members of the Education team and other COO staff as required;
  • Supervises and oversees Education Sector employees to ensure adherence to all Chiefs of Ontario policies and procedures;
  • Works with the Chiefs and Technical Committee on Languages and Learning and all associated advisory groups to ensure strategic political and technical support is utilized to build consensus on matters related to languages and education;
  • Updates and supports the Director of Education;
  • Assists with recruiting, training, and supervision to improve the efficiency and quality of language and education policy and programs;
  • Prepares political and technical communication;
  • Attends relevant meetings and gatherings and reports back to the Director of Education;
  • Travels as required.

RELEVANT SKILLS:

  • A master’s degree in related field and five to ten years’ experience in First Nations languages and/or education.
  • Experience in proposal development and financial management.
  • Proven management and leadership experience.
  • Experience in; strategic planning, implementation, and policy analysis.
  • Knowledge of First Nation traditions cultures and values; understanding the history and relationship between First Nations and the Crown.
  • Experience with federal and provincial governments such as Indigenous Services Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Education.
  • Experience in negotiations and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening, written and verbal.
  • Capacity to work as a team member and independently.
  • Strong creative ability to manage projects, analyze problems, recommend comprehensive solutions and mobilize resources for effective implementation.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • First Nation language would be an asset, but not required.
  • Must be trustworthy, reliable and maintain confidentiality.

Successful Candidate must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
